The origins of these towns where wood handicraft combines with viticulture, date back to the Ancient Roman domination. Indeed, the ancient road joining Cividale (Forum Julii) to the Roman road to Aquileia and Emona (now Lubjana) crossed these areas.

This place was already inhabited in the Early Middle Ages. It belonged to the Patriarchs of Aquileia and during the 15th century it was occupied by the Republic of Venice. Traces of this occupation are clearly visible in the architecture of the buildings.
