Aquileia: theodorian mosaics

The Theodorian mosaic floor of the Basilica covers an area of 750 square metres. It is the biggest and most ancient early-Christian mosaic in the West.

The mosaic floor has neither a uniform nor a recurring motif. On the contrary it consists of 10 different areas depicting biblical and symbolic subjects. It is a sort of "Catechism in pictures" where truths of Faith are told with precision, liveliness and creativity.
