The origins of Castelmonte date back to the end of the Roman Empire or at the very latest to the beginning of the High Middle Ages, during the Barbarian invasions.

Thanks to its particular position on the watershed between the valleys of the Judrio and Natisone rivers, Castelmonte was an ideal vantage point to defend Cividale, a very important city at the time.
